Kate Gilmore is a Professor of Sculpture at the School of Art+Design, Purchase College, SUNY. Born in 1975 in Washington D.C., she resides and works in New York. Gilmore holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (2002) and a Bachelors from Bates College (1997). Her work spans sculpture, performance, and installation, focusing on materiality, public space, and social commentary.
She has exhibited globally, including the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Moscow Biennial (2011), and solo shows at The Everson Museum, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and MoCA Cleveland. Her art is featured in major collections like MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, and the Whitney Museum.
Research interests include conceptual sculpture, performance art, and the interplay of public art with urban environments. Notable works like Standing Here (2010) and They Call Us a Storm (2018) explore body politics and spatial dynamics. Her practice bridges material experimentation with critical social narratives.
