Kate Gilmore is an Associate Professor of Art and Design at Purchase College, SUNY. She holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (2002) and a Bachelors degree from Bates College (1997). Her practice spans performance art, sculpture, and video installation, often exploring themes of gender, physical endurance, and material transformation. Gilmore has exhibited widely, including the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Moscow Biennial, and solo shows at institutions like The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and MoCA Cleveland.
Key research interests include the intersection of body and space, feminist critique through physical action, and the transformative potential of materials. Her work is represented in major collections such as MoMA, Whitney Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum.
Gilmore has received prestigious awards including the Rome Prize (2007/2008), Louis Comfort Tiffany Award (2009/2010), and residencies at the Rauschenberg Foundation (2014). Her performances often involve durational physical challenges, such as breaking through walls or enduring repetitive motions, while maintaining a critical dialogue with art historical traditions.
Notable works include Walk the Walk (2010), a public performance involving continuous pacing on a platform, and Standing Here (2010), a Whitney Biennial piece documenting her escape from a drywall enclosure. Grants include the Art Matters Fellowship (2012) and multiple New York Foundation for the Arts awards.
