Monica Majoli is a Professor in the Department of Art at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where she has been a resident faculty member since 2006. She holds an MFA in Painting from UCLA. Her work explores themes of physicality, consciousness, intersubjectivity, and temporality, often engaging with materiality shifts and the documentary sexual image. She has exhibited widely in prominent institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles).
Her research interests center on intersections of gender, sexuality, and art, with a focus on queer aesthetics and material practices. Her exhibitions include solo shows at Galerie Buchholz, Gagosian Gallery, and Hannah Hoffman Gallery, alongside major group exhibitions like the 2006 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Berlin Biennial. Her work is featured in the permanent collections of institutions like MoMA and the Getty Research Institute.
Awarded the Mohn Career Achievement Award (2020), a Fellowship from Contemporary Art (2006), and a Getty Grant (2002), Majoli’s contributions are documented in publications such as Primary Materials for Black Mirror (2021) and Bound Together (2020). She has taught at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Yale University’s School of Art, and held residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Her academic roles include the Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship at the San Francisco Art Institute (2001).
