Alessandra L. González is an Assistant Research Professor of Economics at Duke University, affiliated with the Department of Economics within the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on gender, development, and organizations, with particular emphasis on the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. She examines topics such as labor market dynamics, cultural norms, women’s empowerment, and multinational firms’ economic impacts.
Her work integrates economics, sociology, and political science to analyze how social norms, policies, and global forces shape gender equality and economic outcomes. Recent projects explore the effects of Saudi Arabia's driving ban removal, female entrepreneurship during the pandemic, and the role of mentorship in educational and labor contexts.
Her research has appeared in top journals like the American Economic Review and European Economic Review, with a focus on gendered mobility, labor force participation, and institutional barriers to women's economic inclusion. Current research includes book-length manuscripts on cultural change and female employment in Saudi Arabia, as well as studies on kinship networks and paternity leave policies.
González collaborates with scholars on projects addressing refugee employment, social barriers to labor force participation, and the intersection of religion and gender in Muslim-majority societies. Her work bridges theoretical insights with policy-relevant analysis, aiming to inform inclusive economic development strategies.
