Stanley Curtis

Stanley Curtis is an Associate Professor of Music at Colorado State University (CSU), appointed to a tenure-track position in 2019. He retired after a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C., where he performed extensively and held leadership roles. He holds a Doctor of Music from Indiana University (2005). His expertise spans trumpet performance, early music, and composition, with award-winning works featuring the trumpet.

• Affiliations: Principal trumpet of the Fort Collins Symphony, member of the CSU Faculty Brass Quintet, and former member of the U.S. Navy Band Brass Quartet.
• Education: Doctor of Music (Indiana University), studies at the University of Alabama, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Netherlands (Fulbright Scholarship).

Research interests include Baroque trumpet performance, historic brass instruments (e.g., cornett), and pedagogy. His compositions have received national acclaim. He has written for the International Trumpet Guild Journal and Historic Brass Society Newsletter.

Award highlights include third prize at the 1995 Altenburg Baroque Trumpet Competition and concerto competition wins at Indiana University, Brevard Music Camp, and the University of Alabama. Critics have praised his expressive phrasing and mastery of historic instruments.

Teaching roles include positions at the University of Evansville, Catholic University of America, and George Mason University. He organized and chaired the Historic Trumpet Division of the National Trumpet Competition (2004–2009).
