Shavonnie Carthens is an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky's Rosenberg College of Law, where she teaches Health Care Law, Public Health Law and Equity, and Civil Procedure. Her research focuses on environmental justice, health equity, and legal literacy, particularly examining how law can improve access to healthy living environments. She also explores intersections of race and the First Amendment.
Education: J.D. (with honors) from North Carolina Central University School of Law; B.A. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Professional Affiliations: Member of Legal Writing Institute (Pro Bono and Community Outreach Committee), board member of The Second Draft, and advisory council member of ABA Commission on Women in the Profession. She collaborates with the Environmental Health Literacy Coalition’s “Air Justice” project and Kentucky Resources Council’s Environmental Health and Justice Working Group.
Pre-Academic Experience: Private practice in Washington, D.C. metro area. Prior academic roles include Assistant Professor at University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, and instructor positions at St. Mary’s University and Elon University School of Law.
Community Engagement: Spearheads legal literacy initiatives, advises the Latinx Law Student Association, and advocates for health equity through interdisciplinary collaborations.
