David A. Brennen is the Frost, Brown & Todd Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky’s Rosenberg College of Law, where he served as dean from 2009 to 2020. He holds a Juris Doctor (1991) and LL.M. in Tax Law (1994) from the University of Florida College of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in finance (1988) from Florida Atlantic University. His expertise lies in nonprofit law and taxation, particularly focusing on charitable organizations and tax exemptions.
Dr. Brennen co-founded the Nonprofit Law Prof Blog and co-authored pioneering casebooks on nonprofit taxation. He currently chairs the ABA Council on Legal Education & Admission to the Bar (2024-25) and previously served as deputy director of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). He has held visiting professorships at the University of Alabama, Temple University, and the University of Florida.
His research explores intersections of tax law with nonprofit operations, including recent analyses of affirmative action policies in tax-exempt institutions. Brennen is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a 2019-20 ACE Fellow. Professional contributions include roles with the ABA Accreditation Committee, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and board memberships at Hospice of the Bluegrass and AccessLex.
