Sean Hall is a Lecturer in the Department of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London. He teaches across various design programs including BA Design, BA Computing and Interaction Design, BEng Design and Innovation, MA Design – Critical Practice, and supervises MRes and MPhil/PhD students.
Dr. Hall's research focuses on the ways designed objects have normalising conditions of production and categories of consumption. His work spans semiotics, design theory, diagrammatic thought, and constructions of the self. He examines how designed objects (shoes, jigsaw puzzles, toys, drinking glasses), pieces of two-dimensional communication (films, CVs), sites of consumption and display (museums, shopping malls, lecture theatres), and contemporary theories of knowledge (Marxism, Wittgensteinianism) all have normalising conditions of production and preset categories of reception and consumption. His research extends Roman Jacobson's insights on language functions to demonstrate how the notion of the 'shifter' can enhance design theory and practice through contextual alteration.
Dr. Hall has published extensively in semiotics and design theory, with his most influential work being 'This Means This, This Means That: A User's Guide to Semiotics' (2007). His recent publications show a trajectory toward philosophical explorations of Žižekian thought, cultural purity concepts, and the value of ideas in innovation. His work consistently bridges theoretical inquiry with practical design applications, as evidenced by projects like 'Pay and Display' at the Victoria and Albert Museum and collaborations on design exhibitions.
His research supervision focuses on semiotics, design theory, diagrammatic thought, and constructions of the self, contributing to theoretical and practical advancements in design education. Dr. Hall's work demonstrates how design thinking can interrogate and transform cultural norms and communication practices through strategic contextual shifts.
