Professor Şebnem Timur is a faculty member at Özyeğin University specializing in Material Culture and Cultural Representation. She holds a PhD in Graphic Design from Bilkent University and has over two decades of academic experience spanning design theory, semiotics, and visual culture research.

Her research analyzes objects as cultural phenomena through semiotic and ethnographic frameworks, focusing on how material culture conveys meaning in societal contexts. She developed the theoretical model "Cultural Approaches to Design" to examine products, rituals, and visual communication systems, bridging design practice with anthropological inquiry. Her work critically explores semantics in visual culture and the socio-cultural dimensions of design education.
Professor Timur has advised 37 graduate students (12 doctoral, 25 master's) and taught over 4,155 students during her tenure at Istanbul Technical University (2003-2023). She has organized numerous academic events including exhibitions, conferences, and seminars while holding administrative responsibilities. Her scholarly contributions span national and international publications in design theory and cultural studies.
