Conrad Bakker is a Professor of Studio Art at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he maintains his studio in the Art and Design Building at 408 E Peabody Dr. As core faculty in the School of Art + Design within the College of Fine and Applied Arts, he teaches painting and sculpture while maintaining an active studio practice.
Professor Bakker's research and artistic practice centers on:
- Critical examinations of material culture and consumer practices
- Conceptual approaches to reproduction and representation
- Explorations of everyday objects and their cultural significance
- Interrogations of digital culture and its relationship to physical objects
- Social practice projects that engage with institutional structures
His distinctive methodology involves creating meticulously hand-carved and painted replicas of mass-produced objects, establishing complex relationships between originals, copies, and handmade reproductions. This process slows down viewer engagement with familiar objects, revealing embedded cultural meanings and economic systems. His work bridges traditional art forms with conceptual strategies to create visually compelling works critically engaged with contemporary issues.
His recent projects demonstrate a continued interest in digital culture and material production, with works addressing social media interactions, global commodity chains, and pandemic-era consumption patterns. Notable ongoing projects include the Robert Smithson Library & Book Club series, La Chocolaterie, and examinations of digital culture through Amazon Delivery Confirmation and Twitter Marginalia.
Professor Bakker's work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, The Wright Museum at Beloit College, The Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, The Krannert Art Museum, Galerie Analix Forever in Geneva, and International Objects in Brooklyn.
