Professor Sarah Brearley is a Professor of Palliative Care at Lancaster University's Faculty of Health and Medicine, working within the Health Research department. Her research focuses on palliative care systems, symptom management, health inequalities, and medical education pedagogy. She has co-edited a handbook on health research methods and led projects evaluating palliative care services in diverse settings.
Her research includes evaluating enhanced 7-day palliative care services, the Manchester Macmillan Supportive Care Programme, and palliative care needs in immunotherapy patients. She explores healthcare equity and patient experiences across hospital, community, and primary care environments. Professor Brearley's pedagogical work examines learner typologies and mesocultures in teaching excellence.
Recent publications highlight her work on palliative care access disparities, care home social distancing during the pandemic, and hospice worker experiences with adolescent cancer patients. She is affiliated with the Institute for Social Futures and the International Observatory on End of Life Care.
Her advising includes PhD students Tala Al-Dabbous, Rebecca Henderson, and Helen Stockton. Current projects focus on palliative care trajectories for immunotherapy recipients and addressing health inequalities in cancer care.
