Sara Arapiles is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Lund University's Department of Law, affiliated with the Faculty of Law. She holds dual roles as a Researcher in Human Rights Law and Public International Law, and as a Profile Area Member of the LU Profile Area on Human Rights. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Socio-Legal Studies from the University of Nottingham, recognized with the DJ Harris Prize for Best Thesis. She has held adjunct roles at Comillas Pontifical University (Madrid) and is a Visiting Professor at the Oñati International Institute for the Sociology of Law, where she teaches 'Sustainable Finance and Human Rights.'
Her research focuses on refugee finance mechanisms (e.g., impact bonds), international refugee law, and slavery-related persecution claims, particularly concerning Eritrean asylum-seekers. She leads the ERC-funded REF-FIN project on refugee financial instruments and has contributed to UN SDG 8.7 initiatives against modern slavery. Her work spans participatory studies with refugees, UNHCR collaborations, and legal advocacy. She serves on committees for ESIL's Migration and Refugee Law Interest Group and the Europe External Programme with Africa.
Key awards include the DJ Harris Prize. Her 19 publications (2015–2025) address digital migration governance, climate-induced mobility, refugee financial tools, and legal frameworks for slavery. She actively engages in global workshops, policy discussions, and academic supervision, including reviewing PhD theses. Her interdisciplinary approach combines legal analysis with socio-economic contexts to advance human rights and refugee protection.
