Zvezda Vankova is an Associate Professor and Senior Researcher at the Department of Law, Lund University. She leads the Swedish Research Council-funded project 'Refugee Protection or Cherry Picking? Assessing New Admission Policies for Refugees in Europe' (2023-2026). Her expertise spans EU Law, Public International Law, and empirical legal studies with a focus on migration, human rights, and refugee integration. She is affiliated with research areas including Human Rights Law, Migration Law, and Public International Law. Vankova co-founded the Øresund Migration Law Initiative (OMiLI) and is a member of IMISCOE, Europe’s largest migration studies network.
Education: PhD in Law from Maastricht University. Prior roles include consultant for the European Parliament, Council of Europe, and UNHCR. She co-authored the Open Access book Circular Migration and the Rights of Migrant Workers in Central and Eastern Europe (2020). Current supervision includes PhD candidates Ehab Alhousari (Lund) and Ruben Tans (Maastricht).
Her research bridges legal frameworks and human mobility, examining how migration policies impact rights and trajectories of displaced populations. Recent work explores refugee finance mechanisms and active admission policies. She has received grants including the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Travel Grant (2020).
Labs/Initiatives: LU Profile Area on Human Rights, OMiLI, and the Active Refugee Admission Policies (ARAP) working group within Netzwerk Fluchtforschung. Engages in policy consultations and public lectures on migration governance.
