Emiliya Bratanova is a doctoral student and researcher at Lund University's Department of Law, affiliated with the Faculty of Law. She holds dual roles as a Researcher in Human Rights Law and Migration Law. Her research focuses on the interplay between migration law and integration outcomes of refugees under complementary pathways in Europe. Bratanova earned an LLM in European and International Human Rights Law (cum laude) from Leiden University and an MSc in Social Sciences from the University of Amsterdam. She previously worked as a refugee integration expert at the UN Refugee Agency in Bulgaria.
Her expertise spans refugee law, EU law implementation, and integration policies in Central and Eastern Europe. Research interests include legal frameworks governing refugee access, integration mechanisms, and the intersection of nationalism with migration law. She is part of the 'Borders Within' project examining migrant integration in Europe, led by Assoc. Prof. Vladislava Stoyanova, and contributes to the 'Legal Pathways in Europe' doctoral project.
Bratanova's publications analyze refugee integration strategies, complementary pathways, and legal barriers in EU member states. Her work bridges theoretical legal analysis with practical policy recommendations, emphasizing human rights compliance in migration governance. She actively participates in academic conferences, including the Refugee Law Initiative Conference and the German Network for Forced Migration Studies.
