Eleni Karageorgiou is a Senior Researcher in Public International Law at Lund University, Faculty of Law, specializing in human rights, migration, and refugee law. She has previously been affiliated with Gothenburg University’s School of Business, Economics and Law and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute. She is actively involved in major research initiatives funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, EU Horizon 2020, and the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation.
Her research centers on the principle of solidarity in international law, particularly in the context of EU asylum policy and refugee protection. She explores the intersection of law and social sciences, focusing on community, political organization, and trust. Her work critically analyzes migration governance, responsibility allocation, and the externalization of EU migration control.
Her recent publications cover topics such as legal responsibility in mobility containment, the implementation of the UN Global Compact on Refugees, and distributive justice in EU migration cooperation. These works reflect a strong interdisciplinary approach, combining legal theory with empirical and policy analysis.

She has supervised bachelor’s and master’s students at Lund University and co-directed a PhD course at the University of Gothenburg. She teaches courses on international law, human rights law, and EU migration law, and has delivered lectures at SOAS, EUI Florence, and other European institutions. She also contributes to policy debates through expert submissions to the UN, EU institutions, and Swedish agencies, and engages in public outreach through media, debates, and library visits.
She leads and participates in significant collaborative projects such as the Lund Human Rights Research Hub and the Borders Within project, emphasizing interdisciplinary and transnational research networks.
