Professor Sailesh Kumar is the Mayne Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Head of the Mayne Academy of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Queensland. He is affiliated with Mater Mothers' Hospital and Mater Research Institute-University of Queensland. His roles include clinical leadership, academic research, and teaching in maternal-fetal medicine.
He trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Singapore, the UK, and Australia, and holds a PhD from the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCS(Ed)), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).
His research focuses on fetal imaging, placental biomarkers, and prediction of adverse perinatal outcomes. He has authored over 300 publications, including books and peer-reviewed articles on fetal medicine, maternal-fetal health, and placental dysfunction. Notable works include Handbook of Fetal Medicine (Cambridge Press) and contributions to Dewhurst's Textbook of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Recent studies explore placental biomarkers in fetal growth restriction, sildenafil use during labor, and the impact of maternal physical activity on placental function. He leads major clinical trials like iSEARCH and RidStress 2, investigating sildenafil to mitigate intrapartum hypoxia risks.
Prof. Kumar advises PhD and Honours students and collaborates on grants related to perinatal science and maternal health. His work has been recognized through fellowships and contributions to international guidelines, including roles on the RCOG's Scientific Advisory Committee and editorial boards of journals like Fetal and Maternal Medicine Review.
