Ryan Goodman is the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. He holds affiliations with NYU’s Department of Sociology (associated member) and Department of Politics (affiliated member), and serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the National Institute of Military Justice. His research focuses on International Human Rights, Law of Armed Conflict, and National Security Law. Goodman previously served as the Rita E. Hauser Professor of Human Rights and director of the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School before joining NYU in 2015. He earned a BA in Government and Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin, a JD from Yale Law School, and a PhD in Sociology from Yale University.
His notable contributions include co-authoring Socializing States: Promoting Human Rights Through International Law (2013), which won the American Society of International Law’s top annual book award. Goodman’s work has influenced landmark Supreme Court rulings, including Hamdan v. Rumsfeld and Lawrence v. Texas. He currently contributes to Just Security, a national security online forum he co-founded, and serves on advisory boards for the U.S. Department of State and the Council on Foreign Relations.
Goodman teaches courses on International Humanitarian Law and the Law of Armed Conflict, addressing topics like drone warfare, cyber operations, and civilian protections. His scholarship and advocacy bridge legal theory with practical policy, emphasizing accountability mechanisms in contemporary conflicts.
