Dr. Joshua Andresen is an Associate Professor of National Security and Foreign Relations Law at the Surrey Law School (University of Surrey), serving as Associate Head of School for Engagement and Director of PhD Admissions. He holds a JD from Yale Law School and a PhD from Northwestern University.
His research focuses on legal frameworks governing modern armed conflict, counterterrorism operations, and the intersection of national security with human rights. Key themes include reconfiguring laws of armed conflict for contemporary challenges, civilian protection in warfare, and regulatory issues around cryptocurrency and anti-money laundering. His work bridges theoretical law and practical policy, advising governments and international bodies like UN Special Rapporteurs.
Recent publications analyze drone warfare's legal implications (Harvard National Security Journal), precision weapons' paradox (Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence), and China's military role in global initiatives (Chinese Journal of Global Governance). His 2016 article on drone warfare due process won the prestigious Edward D. Robbins Memorial Prize at Yale Law School.
Teaching responsibilities include International Humanitarian Law, Public Law, and Criminal Law. He supervises PhD students in national security law, armed conflict litigation, and AML/CFT regulation.
