Ruth Newman is an Associate Professor in Language and Literacy Education at the University of Exeter's School of Education. She teaches on the Secondary English PGCE and MA Education (online) programs. Her research focuses on the role of dialogic talk in teaching language, literacy, and writing, with a particular interest in metalinguistic understanding and collaborative learning. She leads an ESRC-funded project examining classroom talk's impact on writing skills and has contributed to initiatives like the Grammar at GCSE and Powerful Learning Conversations projects.
Qualifications include a PhD (2014), MSc, PGCE in English with Drama, and Senior Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy. Her work explores emotional engagement in dialogic pedagogy and the teacher's role in shaping collaborative discussions.
Ruth is affiliated with the Centre for Research in Language and Literacies. Her recent ESRC New Investigator grant supports research on metalinguistic understanding. She has collaborated with organizations like Pearson, Youth Sports Trust, and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
