Annabel Watson is an Associate Professor at the University of Exeter's School of Education, serving as Director of Education and Student Experience, and faculty Coordinator for Student Experience and Inclusivity in HASS. Her work focuses on writing development, grammar pedagogy, and teacher agency. She holds a PhD from the University of Exeter (2013), alongside qualifications including MSc, DipEd, PGCE, and MA (Cantab). A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Watson has been recognized repeatedly for teaching excellence, including awards for Research-Inspired Teaching (2015), Best Feedback Provider (2016), and Most Supportive Staff Member (2017).
Her research explores contextualized grammar instruction's impact on student writing and metalinguistic understanding, producing resources for NATE, Pearson, and OUP. She also investigates teacher agency in curricular choices and digital pedagogy during pandemic disruptions. Watson supervises doctoral students and contributes to teacher professional development through workshops and CPD courses.
Watson's publications span metalinguistic discourse, curriculum design, and literary pedagogy, with recent work addressing writing dialogues, grammar teaching efficacy, and equity in literacy education. Her research bridges classroom practice and theoretical frameworks, emphasizing dialogic methods and language-rich environments.
