Russell Whitehead is a Sessional Instructor at the University of Alberta and an Instructor at MacEwan University Conservatory of Music. He is a professional trumpeter, conductor, and music educator with extensive experience in performance, pedagogy, and collaboration with orchestras and ensembles. He holds a Bachelor of Music (BM) from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Music (MM) in Performance from the University of Michigan, studying under notable mentors like Armando Ghitalla and Ramone Parcells.
His career highlights include serving as Principal Trumpet of the Saskatoon Symphony, Acting Principal Trumpet of the Edmonton Symphony (2004-05), and over 25 years with the Edmonton Symphony. He has released a solo CD, Prairie Scenes, and collaborates with the brass quintet Bok Brass. Russell has taught for 15 years at the University of Alberta, focusing on trumpet instruction and music pedagogy, and works with community bands, young composers, and diverse ensembles across Alberta.
Whitehead’s research and teaching emphasize music pedagogy and performance, alongside mentorship in new music composition. He has participated in masterclasses and summer programs at the Banff School of the Arts and remains active in adjudicating music festivals and leading clinics for bands and musicians.
