Allene Hackleman

Allene Hackleman is an instructor of horn at the University of Alberta's Department of Music. Since 2004, she has served as the principal horn of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, combining her academic and professional roles in music performance. She is also a member of the Summit Brass ensemble since 2007 and participates in the Canadian National Brass Project. Her teaching engagements include faculty roles at the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Denver, Colorado, where she focuses on brass pedagogy and performance.

Education:

• Bachelor of Music in performance, summa cum laude, from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (student of Randy Gardner)
• Graduated with honours from Interlochen Arts Academy, Michigan, USA

Research and Performance Interests: Allene specializes in horn performance, chamber music collaboration, and orchestral repertoire. She actively engages in classical music interpretation and pedagogy, with a focus on brass instruments. Her performances include concerto engagements with the Edmonton Symphony, Alberta Baroque Ensemble, and Victoria Symphony, alongside chamber music series at venues like the University of Alberta's Convocation Hall and the Pender Harbour Music Festival. She emphasizes interdisciplinary artistic development through residencies and ensemble collaborations.

Professional Activities: Allene has performed internationally with ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, D.C.), Montréal Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and Evansville Philharmonic. She has participated in festivals including Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, Ontario, and was a featured guest artist at the 2010 International Women's Brass Conference in Toronto.

Labs/Teams: She contributes to large-scale brass ensembles: Summit Brass and Canadian National Brass Project. These groups emphasize collective artistic excellence and educational outreach.
