Robert Spittal, D.M.A., serves as Professor of Music at Gonzaga University specializing in Music Theory and Conducting. He directs the Creative Music Lab Ensemble and previously led the Bands program from 1992-2019, directing the Gonzaga Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and Jazz Ensemble (1992-1998).
His educational credentials include:

Dr. Spittal's research centers on wind ensemble literature, particularly the works of Igor Stravinsky and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison. His scholarly contributions appear in the "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band" series, while his creative output spans contemporary classical composition, jazz history, and American music studies. He maintains active collaboration with performers globally through commissioned works.
His recent compositions demonstrate continued innovation in wind literature, with the 2025 "Concerto for Wind Ensemble" performed at the CBDNA conference and the "Partita for Oboe & Wind Ensemble" premiere showcasing evolving techniques in solo-ensemble integration within contemporary classical frameworks.
As an award-winning composer, Dr. Spittal's works are published by Boosey & Hawkes, Maestro, and Fox Music, and performed internationally by ensembles including The Bay Brass, Borealis Wind Quintet, and North Texas Wind Symphony.
Dr. Spittal has shaped Gonzaga's music program through 27 years of ensemble direction and currently cultivates experimental approaches through the Creative Music Lab Ensemble, providing students with collaborative performance opportunities that bridge traditional and contemporary practices.
