Jacob Wallace is an Associate Professor of Bands, Conducting, and Music Theory at South Dakota State University (SDSU), where he directs the Wind Symphony ('The Pride of the Dakotas'), Marching Band, and Athletic Pep Bands. He also teaches conducting, music literature, and music education. His research focuses on contemporary music performance, conducting pedagogy, and diversifying composer representation in ensemble literature.
He holds a D.M.A. from the University of Georgia (2009), an M.M. from Baylor University (2006), and a B.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2004). His academic interests include innovative programming of new works and collaborations with composers through initiatives like projekt (n), which engages students in creating new wind ensemble compositions.
Wallace has published writings in nine volumes of GIA's Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and is known for composer-commissioned program notes that enhance audience engagement with contemporary works. His research has been presented at the Midwest Clinic and conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA).
He serves as an adjudicator, clinician, and conducting faculty at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy. Professional affiliations include the CBDNA, National Association for Music Education (NAfME), South Dakota Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu, Pi Kappa Lambda, and honorary memberships in Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi.
