Warren D. Olfert serves as Professor and Director of Bands at North Dakota State University's Challey School of Music, where he has led the Wind Symphony, taught conducting/music education courses, and coordinated instrumental music programs since 1999. His leadership extends to student teacher supervision and graduate conducting oversight.
His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in instrumental conducting/music education from Florida State University, an M.M. in instrumental conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a B.S. in music education from Bob Jones University.
Dr. Olfert's expertise centers on wind band performance and music education innovation, evidenced by his commissioning of new works from prominent composers like Frank Ticheli and Jocelyn Hagen. His ensembles have premiered contemporary pieces while maintaining rigorous pedagogical standards, with the Wind Symphony performing at the 2010 CBDNA North Central Regional Conference and multiple North Dakota Music Educators Association conferences.
He founded the Northern Ambassadors of Music in 2001—a European tour program now encompassing over 350 participants—and has conducted national tours while producing ensemble recordings. As an active clinician, he presents workshops, adjudicates, and serves as guest conductor across the United States.
Professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Tau Beta Sigma. He previously served as president of the North Dakota Music Educators Association and remains integral to regional music education development.
