John Climer is an Associated Faculty member in Wind Conducting at The Ohio State University’s School of Music, where he teaches undergraduate instrumental conducting and leads the Symphonic Band. Previously, he served as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (2008–2022) and at Ohio University (Athens). He holds a DMA in Conducting from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, an MM from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and a BM in Music Education from the University of Akron.
His expertise spans Instrumental Conducting (wind band) and Conducting Pedagogy, with a focus on ensemble leadership and performance. He has led prestigious ensembles in performances at venues like the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and internationally in Salerno, Italy. His ensembles have performed at four College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) conferences and the 2015 WASBE International Conference.
Climer has earned notable awards, including the Phi Beta Mu Wisconsin Bandmaster of the Year (2021) and multiple teaching accolades. He is a former CBDNA North Central Division President, editor of the CBDNA Report, and contributing author to the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. His professional memberships include Phi Beta Mu, NAfME, and Phi Kappa Phi.
Post-retirement, he remains active as Interim Director of Wind Ensembles at Capital University (2022–23) and continues teaching and conducting at Ohio State.
