Robert Lodge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His research focuses on Precambrian geology, particularly the tectonic and metallogenic evolution of Archean and Paleoproterozoic terranes. He has conducted extensive studies on volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, including the Flambeau Cu-Zn-Au deposit in Wisconsin, and utilizes advanced geochemical and geochronological techniques to reconstruct ancient crustal processes.
Education:
- PhD in Mineral Deposits/Precambrian Geology, Laurentian University
- MSc in Geology, University of Western Ontario
- BSc with Honours in Geology, Acadia University
- BSc in Environmental Science, Acadia University
- Registered Professional Geoscientist (PG)
Research Interests:
Lodge's work integrates field geology, petrology, and geochemistry to understand the interplay between magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes in ancient terranes. Key themes include synvolcanic metallogeny in the Penokean Orogen, geodynamic reconstructions of Archean greenstone belts, and the petrogenesis of intermediate volcanic assemblages. His studies often involve multidisciplinary approaches, such as U-Pb geochronology and trace element analysis, to unravel the timing and mechanisms of crustal evolution.
Publications Trends:
Recent work emphasizes the Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic evolution of the Superior Craton and Penokean Orogen, with a focus on VMS deposits, crustal architecture, and geodynamic shifts. Key contributions include studies on the Wabigoon and Winnipeg River terranes, the Sturgeon Lake greenstone belt, and the Eau Claire Volcanic Complex.
Grants & Collaborations:
Lodge collaborates with institutions such as the Ontario Geological Survey and the Geological Society of America. His fieldwork includes extensive mapping and sampling in Wisconsin, Ontario, and the Superior Craton, often involving graduate and undergraduate students in data collection and analysis.
Labs & Fieldwork:
Field-based research is a cornerstone of Lodge's work, with recent projects focusing on the Penokean Orogen and Superior Craton. He leads field trips for academic conferences and integrates student participation in geologic mapping, sample collection, and analytical studies.
