Phil C. Thurston is a Professor at Laurentian University's Harquail School of Earth Sciences, specializing in Precambrian Geology. He holds a PhD from Western Ontario, with prior experience at the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) and leadership in reconnaissance projects across Ontario. Since 2001, he has focused on greenstone belt stratigraphy, iron formation geochemistry, and gold mineralization. His research combines physical volcanology, sedimentology, and trace element geochemistry to explore Archean tectonic processes.
Education: AB (Rutgers), M.Sc. (Bryn Mawr), PhD (Western Ontario). Courses taught include Precambrian Geology and Tectonics. Current research projects involve the Metal Earth initiative and isotopic studies of the Superior craton. He advises M.Sc. and Ph.D. students on topics like mantle plumes, greenstone belt architecture, and BIF-hosted gold deposits.
Key research themes include greenstone belt evolution, quartzite platforms, and the interplay between geophysics and geology. His work is supported by NSERC and the Discover Abitibi grant. Recent studies focus on the geochemical signatures of chert and BIF in Nunavut and Ontario gold deposits.
