Ben Frieman is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. His work focuses on Archean craton evolution, structural geology, and geophysical imaging of mineral systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Geology from Colorado School of Mines (2018), M.Sc. in Earth Sciences (University of Maine, 2012), and dual B.Sc. degrees in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Minnesota (2010/2020).
Key research interests include: (1) Tectonic evolution of the Superior Province through integrated geophysical and geochemical studies; (2) Structural controls on orogenic gold deposits; (3) Crustal architecture revealed by magnetotelluric imaging; and (4) Detrital zircon analysis for understanding Archean geodynamics. He has conducted fieldwork across Canada (Ontario/Quebec/Yukon) and Nicaragua, applying advanced geophysical methods and structural analysis tools.
Recent work emphasizes Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic tectonic transitions, with publications in Gondwana Research, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, and Tectonophysics. His collaborative projects include the Metal Earth initiative using magnetotelluric surveys to map crustal-scale structures. Current investigations explore linkages between deep crustal processes and surficial mineral systems in ancient greenstone belts.
