Phillip Mitsis is the Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization at New York University (NYU), with affiliations in Classics, Philosophy, and Medieval & Renaissance Studies. Previously, he held the Mellon Chair in the Humanities at Cornell University. His research focuses on Hellenistic philosophy, ancient drama, and modern Greek culture. Mitsis has directed the A.S. Onassis Center/Program in Hellenic Studies at NYU from 1994 to 2005.

Research Interests: Mitsis explores the reception of ancient philosophy, particularly Epicureanism and Stoicism, alongside ancient drama and modern Greek literary culture. His work bridges classical texts with their influence on later periods.
Publications: He has authored/co-edited numerous books, including Paideia on Stage (2023), The Oxford Handbook of Epicurus and Epicureanism (2020), and Epicurus’ Ethical Theory (1988). His scholarship emphasizes ethical theory, textual analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to classical studies.
Awards: Mitsis has received fellowships from the National Humanities Center, ACLS, NEH, and others. He has also been a visiting professor at institutions like Aberdeen, Pittsburgh, and Princeton.
Labs/Teams: His academic leadership includes directing research initiatives at NYU’s Onassis Program and collaborating with global scholars through edited volumes and interdisciplinary projects.
