Jan Maximilian Robitzsch is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Florida, specializing in Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy and Social and Political Philosophy. His research focuses on Hellenistic ethics, particularly Epicureanism, and its intersections with political theory. He previously held positions at Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea), the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the University of Greifswald (Germany).
Robitzsch holds an MA from the University of Cologne (Germany), a visiting student experience at the University of Paris IV – Sorbonne (France), and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. His work bridges classical philosophical texts with contemporary ethical and political debates, including topics like ancient theories of justice, virtue, and the nature of human sociability.
His recent publications explore Epicurus' criteria of truth, the functional classification of desires, and the ethical dimensions of ancient philosophers like Protagoras and Democritus. He also engages with modern thinkers like Hannah Arendt and contemporary cultural phenomena through film analysis. His forthcoming book Epicurus: A Hellenistic Alternative to the Stoa (co-authored) re-examines Epicurean philosophy against Stoic frameworks.
Robitzsch's teaching includes courses on Hellenistic Philosophy (PHH 4141) and Introduction to Philosophy (PHI 2010). His research demonstrates a commitment to both textual fidelity and interdisciplinary relevance, spanning ancient metaphysics, political theory, and modern ethical dilemmas.
