Peter Sullivan is an Artist Lecturer in Trombone at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music and Duquesne University. He currently serves as Principal Trombone of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, appointed by Mariss Jansons. Born in Canada, Sullivan trained at McGill University as an adjunct professor and previously held the position of Solo Trombone with the Montreal Symphony under Charles Dutoit.
His expertise spans solo performance, chamber music, and orchestral roles. Sullivan has performed globally, including in Japan (Pacific Music Festival, Suntory Hall), China (Canton International Summer Music Academy), and Europe. He is renowned for premiering Jennifer Higdon's Trombone Concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
As an educator, Sullivan teaches at Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne, previously at McGill University. He collaborates with Yamaha Corporation on orchestral trombone development. Notable achievements include winning the 1990 Umea International Solo Competition and extensive international masterclasses.
His career highlights include performances with Orchestra Internationale Italia, collaborations with Christian Lindberg, and regular CBC/NPR broadcasts. Sullivan's teaching spans institutions like Juilliard, Banff School, and the New World Symphony.
