Gretchen Van Hoesen is an Artist Lecturer in Harp at Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University. She holds the Virginia Campbell Endowed Principal Harp Chair in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a position she has held since 1977. Her roles combine teaching, performance, and leadership in classical music.
Education: She earned B.M. and M.M. degrees in Harp from The Juilliard School, and studied at the Eastman School of Music Preparatory Department. Additional mentors include Marcel Grandjany, Susann McDonald, and Gloria Agostini.
Research interests focus on harp performance, orchestral collaboration, and chamber music. She has premiered works by composers like Nancy Galbraith and Robert Kelly, and her performances emphasize classical and contemporary harp literature.
Notable awards include the 1978 Passamaneck Competition win and recognition in the Super World Orchestra 2000. She has performed with prestigious orchestras including the Pittsburgh Symphony, New York Lyric Opera, and Spoleto Festival Orchestra (Italy).
Teaching and mentorship: She instructs at Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne, and has led master classes at institutions such as The Curtis Institute and the Aspen Music Festival. Her students have achieved national accolades.
Recordings include collaborations with Jan DeGaetani and Rossen Milanov, featuring works by Alec Wilder and Lawrence Hoffman. She has also recorded with the New Symphony Orchestra in Sofia, Bulgaria.
