Jeff Dee is an Artist Lecturer in Bass Trombone at Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University. He serves as Principal Bass Trombone of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (2016–present), following roles with the Buffalo Philharmonic (2007–2016), Jacksonville Symphony (2002–2007), and Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony (2001–2002). His career includes guest performances with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony.
Education: Master of Music from The Juilliard School (2001), studying under Donald Harwood; Bachelor of Music from Southern Methodist University (1999), mentored by John Kitzman. Notable teachers include Joseph Alessi and Franco Bertacci.
Research interests prioritize orchestral performance excellence, chamber music collaboration, and pedagogical innovation. He has premiered works like Eric Ewazen’s Triple Concerto for Three Trombones and Orchestra (2012) and maintains active roles in music education through masterclasses and programs like the Third Coast Trombone Retreat.
Recipient of the 2017 GRAMMY Award for Best Orchestral Performance with the Pittsburgh Symphony’s recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. His discography spans over 40 albums across six orchestras.
Teaching appointments include Carnegie Mellon (2017–present), Duquesne University (2017–2021), SUNY Fredonia (2009–2015), and the University of North Florida (2004–2007). His pedagogical resources, including drone practice guides and structured Arban method routines, are shared publicly for student use.
