Jeffrey Gray is an Instructor of Orchestral Repertory and Low Brass at the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), Eastman Community Music School, and Roberts Wesleyan College. He holds positions in prominent orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (since 2011) and previously with the Grant Park Orchestra (2003-2014) and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (2000-2011). His performance career includes engagements with orchestras in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo, Alabama, and Toledo, as well as recordings with the Juilliard Wind Ensemble.
Gray’s education includes a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Bowling Green State University and further study at The Juilliard School. Influential teachers include Paul Hunt, Dennis Smith, Don Harwood, and Joe Alessi. In 2000, he won two major international bass trombone competitions: the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize and Donald Yaxley Solo Competition, a rare dual achievement. He performed as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic in 2016, showcasing Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Bass Trombone.
His teaching spans multiple institutions, emphasizing orchestral repertory and brass performance. He has also contributed to the National Repertory Orchestra and remains active in competitive and festival contexts, reflecting his expertise in both performance and pedagogy.
