Jeffrey Turner serves as Professor of Music specializing in Double Bass at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. His distinguished career includes tenure as principal bass of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1987-1992), New American Chamber Orchestra (1984-1986), and Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1986-87). Academically, he held leadership roles as Director of Orchestral Studies and multi-term Chair of the Strings Department at Duquesne University, and served as visiting professor at Eastman School of Music, University of Maryland, and Carnegie Mellon University.
Turner's artistic focus centers on advancing double bass performance through rigorous technique development and orchestral repertoire mastery. His work emphasizes chamber music collaboration and pedagogical innovation in string education, demonstrated through global master classes and festival residencies. He actively shapes performance practices by mentoring emerging musicians in both orchestral and chamber settings, with particular expertise in bass pedagogy and ensemble leadership.
As Artistic Director of the City Music Center Chamber Orchestra and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Live Chamber Orchestra, Turner demonstrates significant ensemble leadership. His educational impact extends through annual residencies at major festivals including the Pacific Music Festival, National Youth Orchestra (U.S.), and National Orchestral Institute, where he cultivates the next generation of orchestral musicians through intensive performance training and mentorship programs.
