Patrick Hopkins is an Assistant Professor of Low Strings and Director of Orchestra in the Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University. A distinguished cellist and conductor, he has performed internationally at venues including Alice Tully Hall, David Geffen Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Merkin Hall, The New World Center, and Suntory Hall, with notable debuts such as his 2008 Lincoln Center appearance as soloist with the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra.
Dr. Hopkins' educational journey began with cello studies at age four in Fairbanks, Alaska, and includes:
- Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School, where he studied under Bonnie Hampton and Richard Aaron as a scholarship student
- Master of Music in Orchestral Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, earning a full scholarship under Alan Stepansky
- Doctor of Musical Arts from Rutgers University, completing a full scholarship program with Jonathan Spitz
His research and performance interests center on orchestral performance, chamber music, cello performance, conducting, and music education. With extensive experience as both a soloist and ensemble player, Dr. Hopkins has developed profound expertise in classical repertoire and contemporary works through collaborations with renowned musicians and ensembles.
Dr. Hopkins has received significant recognition including:
- Grand Prize winner of the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Competition (2011)
- Recipient of the 2010 Young Alaskan Artist Award, which led to his Anchorage recital debut
- Designation as a Yamaha Young Performing Artist
In academic roles, Dr. Hopkins teaches cello, bass, and chamber music while conducting string ensembles. Previously, he served as a lecturer at Rutgers University and faculty at South Texas College. His professional development has been supported by summer fellowships from the National Repertory Orchestra, Spoleto Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Music Academy of the West. Currently, he serves as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra.
As an active chamber musician, Dr. Hopkins performs nationally with the New York-based ensemble Frisson. His orchestral leadership includes principal cellist positions with the Aspen Opera Theater Company Orchestra, The Juilliard Orchestra, Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra, and Rutgers Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with conductors including Alan Gilbert, Bernard Haitink, Robert Spano, and Yannick Nezet-Seguin.
