Maureen Hynes

Maureen Hynes is an Adjunct Professor of Cello and Director of Orchestral and String Studies at Long Island University (LIU Post), where she also directs the LIU Post Orchestra and LIU Post String Ensemble. She is a member of the Pierrot Consort, the faculty ensemble-in-residence at LIU Post, and teaches conducting at the Manhattan School of Music since 2015.

Her educational background includes a B.M. and M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music.

Maureen Hynes specializes in cello performance, conducting, chamber music, and Renaissance music. Her career spans solo, orchestral, and chamber performance with renowned ensembles such as the American Ballet Theater, American Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Orchestra of New York. She frequently performs at major venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Kennedy Center, and has toured internationally in Europe, Canada, Asia, and Ireland.

She has created and led key music programs at LIU Post, including the LIU Post String Ensemble, the Pre-College Music Program, and the LIU Post Chamber Music Festival, significantly contributing to music education and student development.

Ms. Hynes is actively involved in mentoring students through ensemble direction, masterclasses, and festival adjudications. She has conducted string sectional rehearsals at the Manhattan School of Music and leads orchestral clinics across Long Island high schools. Her work includes conducting the Queens Symphony Orchestra and guest conducting at All-County and LISFA festivals.

She performs regularly with the Pierrot Consort and has been a featured soloist and faculty member at Songe d’été en musique in Quebec since 2011. Her artistic work includes performances on both cello and viola da gamba, with recordings such as “Songs of Henry Cowell” on Albany Records and multiple releases with the American Symphony Orchestra.
