Joseph Johnson is an Associate Professor of Violoncello at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He previously held the same position at the University of Toronto. Principal cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2009, he has also served as principal cellist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Opera, and Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. His career spans solo, chamber, and orchestral performances globally.
Education:
- Graduate of Eastman School of Music
- Master’s degree from Northwestern University
Research & Performance Interests: Specializes in classical cello repertoire, championing new music through premieres like Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto and Peter Oetvos’ Cello Concerto. Active in orchestral roles with major ensembles and festivals worldwide.
Recent Performances: 2023/2024 highlights include Brahms Double Concerto with Symphony Nova Scotia, Strauss Don Quixote with Toronto Symphony, and Beethoven Triple Concerto. Performs on a J.B. Vuillaume cello (1840).
Teaching & Awards: Conducts masterclasses at institutions like Eastman School of Music and Manhattan School of Music. Recognized with McKnight Foundation Award (2005) and ASTA National Solo Competition first prize.
