Rafael Hoekman is an Instructor of Cello at the University of Alberta and serves as Principal Cellist of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He holds a Master of Music (M.Mus) from the University of Toronto, studying under Yuli Turovsky and Shauna Rolston. His career includes principal roles in the Winnipeg and Windsor Symphonies, and performances with the Toronto, Detroit, and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestras. He is a founding member of the Tokai String Quartet, prize winners at the Banff International String Quartet Competition.
Research interests focus on cello technique and pedagogy, complemented by active solo and chamber music performances. Career highlights include solo performances with major Canadian orchestras (Edmonton, Calgary, Quebec, Montreal), and winning the prestigious Orford International Competition in 1998. Currently resides in Edmonton with his wife Meran Currie-Roberts and children Sam and Anastasia, while also serving as Principal Cellist for the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra (Boulder, CO).
Awards include multiple competition prizes spanning orchestral and chamber music categories. Teaching emphasizes cello performance techniques and concert preparation. Recent performances include Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and Shostakovich's Concerto No. 1.
