Dr. Peter James Rowlett is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the School of Computing and Digital Technologies, part of the College of Business, Technology and Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. He specializes in teaching mathematics, programming, and the history of mathematics to students in mathematics, physics, and engineering. His research focuses on improving higher education teaching and learning practices, particularly in mathematics, with an emphasis on graduate skills development, e-assessment, and the integration of recreational mathematics into education.
Rowlett has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, and the British Society for the History of Mathematics. He previously taught at Nottingham Trent University and Keele University and coordinated the HE curriculum activity under the National HE STEM Programme. His communication work includes podcasting, articles for Nature, Chalkdust Magazine, and The Aperiodical.
His research interests span graduate employability, learning technology, puzzle-based learning, history of mathematics in teaching, and disability access in education. He is an editor of MSOR Connections, a journal focusing on innovative practices in mathematics, statistics, and operational research education. Rowlett is also involved in outreach activities, including organizing the MathsJam recreational mathematics network and promoting mathematics through public engagement.
Rowlett has supervised doctoral projects in STEM education, including studies on GCSE mathematics in further education and interdisciplinary teaching's impact on employability. He holds a PhD in mathematics education from Nottingham Trent University and is a Chartered Mathematician, Fellow of the IMA, and Senior Fellow of the HEA.
