Dr. Pepijn Corduwener is an Associate Professor at the Department of History and Art History, Utrecht University, specializing in Political History. His research focuses on the evolution of democracy and populism in Western Europe, with a particular emphasis on Italy and the role of political parties in shaping democratic systems. He is affiliated with the Humanities Research Institute for History and Art History and the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) research theme.

Corduwener’s scholarly work examines intersections of democracy, political parties, and state relations, notably in France, Germany, and Italy (1945-1989). Recent projects include analyzing how historical democracies responded to media technology innovations under an NWO XS grant and a collaborative study with Eleni Braat on the legacy of the Berlin Wall’s fall for Western Europe.
His 2024 publications include a research agenda on media governance in democratic crises, a study on internal party democracy in postwar Europe, and analysis of British occupation’s role in democratization. Earlier work (2023) covers Italy’s party system renewal in the 1980s, socialist party transformations, and a monograph on Western European democracy. He has also contributed to debates on transnational European history and Cold War moderation ideologies.
