Liesbeth van de Grift is a Professor of International History and the Environment at Utrecht University, where she has been employed since 2015. She serves as director of the Research Institute History and Art History and initiated the Network for Environmental Humanities. Her research explores the political representation of nature and environmental governance in 20th-century Europe, with a focus on consumer movements, interest groups, and democratic legitimacy.

Her research spans three key areas:
- Political Representation: Analyzing how consumer and environmental groups reshaped European governance since the 1970s.
- Environmental History: Linking rural resettlement initiatives in interwar Europe to modern sustainability challenges.
- Democratic Legitimacy: Investigating the tension between producer and consumer interests in EU policy-making.
Recent publications highlight her VIDI project on consumer activism and its impact on EU participatory democracy. She has received prestigious grants including NWO-Vidi (2017) and Veni (2010), and held visiting positions at UCLA (2010) and European University Institute (2017).
