Jelle Lammerts van Bueren is a PhD candidate and researcher at Utrecht University's Faculty of Humanities, Department of History and Art History, specializing in Political History. Based in Room 2.01 at Drift 6 in Utrecht, he conducts research on referendum practices within postwar Western European democracies with particular focus on France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
His research interests include:
- Political History of Western Europe
- Parliamentary and Alternative Democratic Systems
- Contemporary Democratic Development
- French Political Culture
- Referendum Mechanisms and Historical Analysis
- Comparative Democratic Models
His publications reveal consistent focus on referendum practices across different historical periods, with particular attention to French political development. The research shows evolving analytical frameworks from early 20th century migration patterns to contemporary democratic crises, demonstrating methodological sophistication in historical comparison and counterfactual analysis. His most recent work establishes referendums as critical lenses for understanding national variations in democratic development.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Dutch Research Council (NWO) PhD in the Humanities Fellowship
- Membership in Utrecht University's PhD Council of the Research School of Political History
His current NWO-funded project "Contesting Restrained Democracy" (2024-2028) challenges conventional historiography by demonstrating that referendum debates have been integral to Western European democracy since 1945 rather than representing a contemporary rupture. Supervised by Dr. P. Corduwener and Professor I. de Haan, this comparative historical research examines why referendums were debated and implemented differently across France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. His research contributes significantly to understanding both historical democratic development and contemporary solutions to democracy's perceived crisis.
