Fernando Casal Bertoa is an Associate Professor in Comparative Politics at the University of Nottingham’s School of Politics and International Relations, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He co-directs the Research Centre for the Study of Parties and Democracy (REPRESENT). His expertise lies in party systems, democratic consolidation, and electoral politics, with a focus on Europe and post-communist countries.
Education includes a Law degree (cum laude) from the University of Navarra, a Political Science degree (cum laude) from the University of Salamanca, and a PhD from the European University Institute. His research explores institutionalization of party systems, political finance regulation, and constitutional design impacts on democracy. Notable projects include a large-scale study of European party systems since 1848 and analyses of post-Soviet party funding dynamics.
His research interests center on how party system structures influence democratic stability, particularly through closure mechanisms and governance alternatives. Recent work examines presidential elections’ effects on party systems and the rise of anti-establishment parties in Western Europe.
Key awards include the AECPA Best Book Prize for Party System Closure (OUP, 2021) and multiple academic accolades recognizing his contributions to comparative politics. He advises international bodies like the OSCE/ODIHR and the Venice Commission.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on comparative democratic development and global party systems. His work integrates quantitative and qualitative methods, emphasizing historical depth and institutional context.
