Stephen Whitefield

Stephen Whitefield is a Professor of Politics at the University of Oxford's Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR), and Rhodes Pelczynski Tutorial Fellow in Politics at Pembroke College. He specializes in post-Communist politics, democratisation, social inequality, and political parties. His research focuses on comparative politics of Russia and Eastern Europe, including studies on political culture, European integration, and electoral behavior.

Education:

• DPhil (PhD) in Politics, focusing on Soviet political institutions (1991 thesis)

Research Interests: Whitefield explores post-Communist transitions, the political implications of social inequality, and the dynamics of party competition in turbulent contexts. His work bridges comparative politics and democratic theory, with recent emphasis on neo-authoritarian trends in Europe and the liberal democratic response. He has conducted mass surveys in 13 post-Communist countries and collaborates internationally on expert surveys analyzing party stances toward European integration and social inequality.
