Sharon L. Wolchik is a Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University (GW), where she holds a full-time faculty position. Her expertise focuses on Central and Eastern European politics, comparative politics of the region, and post-communist transitions. She teaches courses on the politics of Russia and Central/Eastern Europe, comparative governments of Eastern Europe, and the international politics of the region. Wolchik earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
Her research explores the role of women in post-communist governance, ethnic issues in post-Soviet societies, and party system development in the Czech and Slovak Republics. She has authored or edited influential books, including Defeating Authoritarian Leaders in Postcommunist Countries (2011) and Ukraine: The Search for a National Identity (1999). These works analyze political transitions, national identity formation, and gender dynamics in transformative societies.
Wolchik’s publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement with themes such as democratization, authoritarian regimes, and regional security. Her work bridges academic and policy-oriented audiences, contributing to understanding the complexities of post-communist state-building and identity politics.
