Dr. Pauline Jacobs is an Associate Professor in Criminal (Procedure) Law at Tilburg University, affiliated with the Tilburg Law School and the Department of Criminal Law. She holds a dual expertise in Criminal Law and Human Rights, with a focus on penitentiary law, prisoner rights, and legal frameworks governing corrections. Her research addresses issues such as transgender prisoners' treatment, pre-trial detention, life-term sentencing, and fair trial procedures in digital contexts.
Education: LL.M. and Research Master in Law (M.Phil) from Tilburg University. Prior roles include teaching at Leiden University and being an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University’s Willem Pompe Institute.
Research interests span penitentiary law, human rights in criminal justice, and the intersection of technology with legal procedures. Key projects include interdisciplinary studies on remote trials and policy recommendations for transgender detainees. She actively contributes to Dutch and international legal bodies, including the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on criminal liability and penitentiary law, along with supervising master’s theses. She leads the Rechtsgeleerdheid master’s program and chairs academic committees. Recent work emphasizes prison conditions, legal reform, and the ethical implications of technology in criminal proceedings.
