Paul Meyer Reimer serves as Professor of Physics and Department Chair at Goshen College. With a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1994), his academic journey includes significant international research experiences in Japan, Germany, and the UK. His current research focuses on applying remote sensing data to environmental challenges, particularly drought and groundwater analysis.
His research interests span semiconductor physics, materials science, and environmental applications of remote sensing. Early in his career, he specialized in x-ray diffraction studies of semiconductor heterostructures and hydrogen in metals. More recently, he has shifted focus to environmental physics, leading projects on mycotoxin risk mapping in Tanzania using Global Precipitation Measurement satellite data and groundwater analysis using GRACE satellite data combined with Community Land Model projections.
His publication record shows a strong focus on semiconductor physics from the 1990s through early 2000s, with numerous papers on III-V and II-VI semiconductor superlattices, particularly those with sinusoidal compositional modulation. His research consistently involves undergraduate students, reflecting Goshen College's emphasis on undergraduate research opportunities.
Among his notable achievements are multiple prestigious fellowships including JSPS Fellow at Tokyo Institute of Technology (1995-1996), DAAD Fellow in Germany (1991-1992), and IBM Fellow at the University of Illinois (1989-1990). His international experience extends beyond research to teaching, having co-led Goshen College's Study Service Term programs in Tanzania, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
Professor Reimer has been deeply involved in academic service, currently serving as Physics Department Chair (2022-present) and previously as Engineering 3-2 advisor. He has served on numerous college committees including Faculty Affairs, Academic Affairs, International Education, and Sustainability. He is a member of the American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, and American Geophysical Union.
