Ana Paula Barros is a Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois. She also holds the Donald Biggar Willett Chair and serves as Professor at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, Oregon Institute of Technology (1990)
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of Washington (1993)
Her research focuses on water-cycle processes in coupled land-atmosphere-biosphere systems, particularly in complex terrain, with expertise in water security, environmental sustainability, computational fluid mechanics, and nonlinear data analysis. She combines field experiments, large-scale modeling, and remote sensing (microwave/infrared sensors) to study cloud-precipitation dynamics and natural hazard predictability.
Recent publications highlight her work in precipitation microphysics, eco-hydrological interactions, and remote sensing of snow dynamics. She applies Bayesian statistical approaches to SAR data and investigates groundwater-vegetation feedback mechanisms in arid ecosystems.
Scientific honors include:
- Election to the National Academy of Engineering (2019)
- Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers
She leads interdisciplinary research programs at the intersection of environmental engineering, atmospheric science, and sustainability, with institutional affiliations spanning the College of Engineering and Latin American Studies initiatives.
